ADMISSION POLICY
AGRE REQUIREMENTS:
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:
ABSENCE
Since absence interferes with a student's progress, everyone should
strive to be present daily. If your child is absent it is important for you,
the parent, to call the school by 9AM and report your child absent, according
to state law, UPON RETURNING TO SCHOOL AFTER AN ABSENCE, A STUDENT MUST
PRESENT A WRITTEN EXCUSE FROM HIS/HER PARENT The note must contain the
day/days the student was absent and the reason for the absence.
To allow habits of poor attendance would be an injustice to our children
both for the present time and for the future.
CONSISTENT SUSPICIOUS PATTERNS, IF NOT RESOLVED, MAY RESULT IN RETENTION
IN THE GRADE, DISMISSAL FROM SCHOOL, AND/OR A POSSIBLE VISIT FROM THE
DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES.
IF A STUDENT HAS A PROLONGED ABSENCE (3 DAYS), A DOCTOR'S CERTIFICATE
MUST BE PRESENTED UPON RETURN TO SCHOOL.
It is the student's responsibility to make up the work and tests missed,
on terms convenient to the individual teacher.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
Each child admitted to the school must attend class daily in order to
attain mastery of the basic skills offered. Students must be on time with
all assignments completed, and must maintain a 70% average in each subject in
order to pass.
Pleasure trips while school is in session are not encouraged. Parents
must take full responsibility. All work must be made-up by the individual(s)
involved.
MEETING WITH TEACHERS
Meetings can be arranged by notifying the individual teacher. These
meetings must always be held outside the school hours. Meetings may be held
before school when the appointment is scheduled in writing with the teacher.
Parents desiring conferences with any teacher are asked to make this
request in writing so that records can be reviewed and be available at the
time of the meeting.
PARENTS AND VISITORS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM NOR IN THE
CORRIDORS DURING SCHOOL HOURS. ALL VISITORS MUST FIRST PRESENT THEMSELVES TO
THE OFFICE.
EMERGENCY CLOSING
SGS will close for inclement weather when the Archdiocese announces the
closing! Please listen to KYW 1060. Please DO NOT CALL THE RECTORY OR THE
SCHOOL as we receive the news through the same media.
If it becomes necessary to dismiss the children for any emergency, the
school will send out an OPTION C alert. Please instruct the child as
to where he/she is to go and what they should do at such dismissals.
EMERGENCY CARD
At the beginning of each school year, these cards are sent home for each
child. They are to be returned and kept on file in the Main Office. It is
imperative to have this information in case an emergency arises and the
parent or emergency contact person must be reached.
Please provide an emergency contact person in case of sickness or
unexpected school closing. In cases where the parent isn't able to be
reached, the emergency contact person will be there for the child.
The home phone number and the emergency phone number cannot be the
same. It is important to keep the school informed of any changes in this
emergency information.
DRESS CODE (Uniforms supplied by DiGiulio’s)
A student's appearance, self-respect and performance have a tendency to
compliment each other. We encourage the students to take pride in their

are expected to be covered and kept clean at all times. All copybooks and
school materials are to be kept clean, neat, and free of graffiti. Every
child must carry school books to and from school in a book bag. Any book
that is lost, destroyed, damaged, or deliberately defaced must be paid for by
the student.
CALENDARS
A monthly school calendar is posted to our school website each month. Any additions to
the calendar will be sent home with the oldest child. Monthly information can also be
accessed on the school website – http://TeacherWeb.com/PA/SaintGeorge/School
CHANGE OF ADDRESS OR TELEPHONE
Please notify the SCHOOL OFFICE AND TEACHER immediately in the event of
any change of address or telephone number.
DETENTION
If a detention is necessary, parents will receive a written notice or
phone call at least 24 hours prior to the detention. Detention times are at
the discretion of the teacher who is issuing the detention. The detention
notice is to be signed by the parent and returned to the teacher. Date and
time of the detention will be noted on the detention slip or notified by
phone. Detentions may not be excused or re-scheduled unless a SERIOUS
PROBLEM is given. On occasion an immediate detention may be given by the
office, but the parents will be notified of such action.
LUNCH
Children who stay for lunch must be enrolled in the school lunch program
by the written "Lunch Contract" sent home at the beginning of the school
year. Once enrolled, the student may not go home UNLESS A PARENT SIGNS THE
STUDENT OUT AT THE SCHOOL OFFICE. It is highly suggested that a healthy
lunch and snack be given to your child.
Any student transgressing lunch rules and regulations (disrespect,
disobedience, etc.) will receive a correction slip wherein the parent is
notified and the student is given a detention. If the incorrect behavior
still continues, the student is expelled from the lunch program and provision
must be made by the parent for the student to eat elsewhere. This is
strictly enforced for the safety of all our students.
Rowdy behavior, disobedience or disrespect toward the lunch monitors,
running or fighting, will be reported to the parents by means of a correction
slip that is to be signed and returned to the office.
Students who go home for lunch should not return earlier than 12:30. No
student from St. George may eat lunch at a restaurant. It is too dangerous
to have children unsupervised. Students are to know that the courtesy and
good manners taught at home are to be practiced in school.
LUNCH RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. Every student must be in their seat during lunch.
2. Each student must have a napkin
3. All students must properly dispose of trash and clean up their space
4. No SODA is allowed or glass bottled juices.
FIELD TRIPS
Field trips, of an educational nature, may be taken at the discretion of
the teacher and with the permission of the Principal. Permission slips are
to be completed by the parents and sent back to school. If the slip is not
returned, a child may not take part in the trip. A verbal permission will
not be accepted.
Parents are often asked to assist the teachers to ensure the safety of
the students. STUDENTS WILL BE DISMISSED AT REGULAR TIME AFTER THEIR FIELD
TRIP.
FIRE DRILLS
One of the greatest dangers in a school building is fire. Therefore,
students are urged to be safety conscious and follow the fire regulations
posted in each classroom exactly. Absolute silence and moving quickly but
not running is stressed. Students remain outside in a given area until the
signal is given to return.
GUIDANCE AND REFERRAL SERVICES
CORA (Counseling or Referral Assistance)
At present we have Speech, Reading, Math, Counseling and Psychological
Services.
TITLE 1
Remediation in Reading, SCL - Parent Involvement Counselor
HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
The purpose of the Home & School Association is to promote and foster
the advancement of the Catholic education at the school. Membership is open
to all parents or guardians of the children attending St. George. There are
normally four general meetings during the year giving parents and teachers a
means of sharing experiences for the benefit of the child, the school, and
the home. Dates and times are noted on the monthly calendar.
HOMEWORK
Homework is assigned as a strengthening device and as an extension of
the learning experience in school. Parents are to supervise but NEVER do the
work for the child. Cooperation at home in this matter will greatly
facilitate the teacher's responsibility to see that it is done. Time
allotments for homework are as follows:
Grades 1 and 2 -- about 30 minutes
Grades 3 and 4 -- about 60 minutes
Grades 5 and 6 -- about 90 minutes
Grades 7 and 8 -- about 120 minutes
Note: In upper grades a great portion of homework is STUDY.
Homework is not given over the weekend. The exception to this are
weekends prior to exams where homework may be needed.
IF YOUR CHILD IS ABSENT, IT IS HIS/HER RESPONSIBILITY TO GET THE
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS.
Homework, written or study is given every night. (Monday thru
Thursday). All students are encouraged to do homework completely, correctly,
and neatly.
LATENESS
Any student entering school late (after 8AM –Grades 1-8, or after 8:15am –
Grades PK & K) must obtain a late slip from the office. Consistent lateness
will be recorded as "parental neglect" on the permanent record card. A
student is considered late when the bell rings and the child does not come in
with the line.
Once a student enters the school grounds, he/she may not leave for any
reason unless a parent gives prior notice to school that their child/children
will be picked-up and signed out for a serious matter.
DISCIPLINARY POLICES AND CONTRACT
Possession, use or distribution of weapons (anything capable of
inflicting serious injury), illegal drugs, alcohol, and/or pornographic
material by any student on school/parish property will constitute grounds for
possible EXPULSION.
Students in Second through Eighth grade committing the following
infractions on school/parish property may be suspended/expelled accordingly
by the school administration.
1. Using obscene or foul language (cursing) either in written or verbal
form or by gesture.
2. Verbally or physically threatening, intimidating, or sexually
harassing
another student.
3. Defacing/destroying/stealing school or individual property.
4. Cheating on test/exams or any graded assignment.
5. Overt and blatant disrespect or disregard for authority.
(e.g. leaving grounds without permission, ignoring directives, openly
refusing to do work, etc.)
6. Forgery of parent/guardian signature.
7. Carring or smoking of any tobacco products.
The following infractions warrant a ONE HOUR DETENTION issued in writing
by the individual teacher.
1. Gum chewing
2. Unexcused lateness
3. Returning to school without a written absentee note
4. Lack of proper care of books and school materials
5. Repeated violation of dress code
6. Excessive talking or disruption of class
AFTER AN ACCUMULATED FIVE ONE-HOUR DETENTIONS, A SUSPENSION WILL BE
ISSUED DUE TO OVERT AND BLATANT DISRESPECT OR DISREGARD FOR AUTHORITY.
Expulsion from school and all requests for transfer to another school or
institution must have the approval of both the Principal and the Pastor.
SUSPENSION/EXPULSION PROCEDURES:
First Offense: 1 day suspension
Second Offense: 2 day at home suspension
Third Offense: POSSIBLE EXPULSION
*SUSPENSIONS ARE CUMULATIVE THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR AND NOT ELIMINATED
WITH EACH NEW MARKING PERIOD.
Students in Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Grade committing these same
infractions will be:
1) Parents will be notified in writing of serious offense.
2) Discipline Policies regarding Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First Grade
students will be determined/implemented by the classroom
teacher
and Administration.
3) Repetition of serious offenses could lead to counseling and
possible
placement in another school suitable for the childs needs.
Classroom policies concerning missed homework assignments and
irresponsibility of students to return home and school correspondences are at
the discretion of the individual teacher.
MEDICATIONS
Sometimes children need medication administered on a short term basis in
order to function in the classroom. All medication should come to the office
in a prescription labelled container stating:
Child's Name
Address
Prescription Date/Doctor's Name
Name of Medication, Dosage and time to be
given
Parent Signature
Often, when medication is to be given three times a day, ideally it
should be administered before school, after school and at bedtime.
All long term medication requests must be approved by the Director of
Health Services and a procedure is to be followed. Contact the School Nurse
for this procedure.
1. Aspirin/Tylenol is never given in school without parent
consent
2. Notify the school nurse if your child has a medical
problem
3. All children must be accompanied by an adult when sent
home
PARENTS
Parents must weigh seriously their obligation to educate their children
in an atmosphere of love and respect for God and man. The home is the first
school for the social virtues essential to any well ordered society. The
many sacrifices parents make to provide a Catholic education for their
children are pleasing to God and a building up of the human race.
Cooperation of parents with the school is expressed by:
1. Assuming responsibility of weekly attendance at Sunday Mass and
the reception of the sacraments.
2. Sending the child to school physically fit, with sufficient
sleep, clean and properly dressed and fed.
3. Assisting the child in his/her academic and moral development
through examining his/her report card carefully, supervising home study,
signing and returning tests, and cooperating with the school in matters of
activities, recreation, fund raising, and discipline.
4. Trying to discover the child's special interests and talents so
that they may be developed in cooperation with the teacher.
5. Sending a written explanation each time a child is absent from
school.
DUE ON DAY STUDENT RETURNS. If note is not sent in, a call from
the office will be required to allow the child re-entry. Please include date
(s) of absence(s).
6. Taking an active role in the Home and School Association.
7. Upholding the authority of the faculty and speaking respectfully
of the school and teachers in the presence of your children.
8. Having a telephone number on file in the office where you can be
reached. We will respect the privacy of your "unlisted number", but we
must have it in the office.
9. WHEN YOU ENROLL YOUR CHILD IN OUR SCHOOL, YOU ALSO
“ENROLL” THEM AND YOURSELVES INTO THE RULES, POLICIES AND PROCEDURES SET
FORTH BY THE SCHOOL. Failure to adhere to these set rules may result in
excusing your child from the school.
NON-PROMOTION
1. Insufficient application in either reading or math or both indicate
the possible need to repeat in Grade 1 to 3.
2. If a child shows evidence of emotional immaturity, it is advisable
to possibly repeat the grade.
3. Three failures on the final report card in major subjects or in
general average warrant repeating for students in Grade 4 to 6.
4. Seventh and eighth grade students may not repeat the grade in
SGS. Seventh grade students who have not done work that warrants
being promoted would either be transferred and repeat the grade
elsewhere or would be required to attend summer school. A test must
be taken upon the summer school student's return in September or
first Monday back to ensure that the student has progressed
sufficiently during the summer months. This test and verification of
attendance in summer school would be determining factors as to the
student's re-entry into our school in September.
5. Eighth grade students who have not done work that warrants being
promoted would have their records turned over to the
Diocesan Advisory Board. Rather than being promoted their individual
case would be "UNDER REVIEW".
6. Students throughout Grades 4 to 7 lacking in skills in a particular
subject would be required to attend summer school, be tutored, or do teacher
pre-scribed make-up work.
7. Parents are notified before the final report card is issued if
there seems to be a danger of possible non-promotion. A letter is
signed and filed in the office.
SCHOOL NURSE SERVICE
ILLNESS:
A child who is too ill to remain in class reports to the school nurse or
school office. If it is necessary that the child be sent home, parents or
the emergency contact person will be notified by the nurse or through the
school office. The child will be brought to the school office for the parent
or emergency contact person and the "EARLY DISMISSAL REGISTER" must be signed.
Please keep the student home if he/she is obviously sick. Occasionally
children are sent to school and are in the nurse's office/school office
almost immediately at the beginning of the school day.
Care given in the school is limited to first aid in accidents and
illness until the parent or emergency contact can be reached to take the
child home, to the doctor or hospital.
EMERGENCY cards are kept for each child providing information to assist
in locating parents or an emergency person. It is important for parents to
keep this information up-to-date in the school.
NEW REGISTRATION
Incoming Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, First Grade, and all other
students new to the school is usually the first week of February.
Registration is in the School Office between 9:00AM till 11:00PM and 1:00

St. George must be re-registered. The registration forms are sent home by
way of the oldest child in each family. The completed forms and fees must be
returned to the school office.
Re-registration Fee: Notification will be sent by the School Office.
REPORT CARDS
Report cards are issued three times a year - December, March, and June.
Marks are based on tests, classwork, homework, projects, class participation
and teacher's judgements. Conduct is based on the student following the St.
George School and classroom policies.
Parents will be given paper copies of the report card, generated through OptionC, which they can keep.
SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM
Sacrament of Reconciliation - First Penance will take place in the month
of February, for the students of Grade 3 and any other students who need to
make their First Penance.
Holy Eucharist - Reception of the Sacrament will be first Sunday in
May.

(more information will be given)
Confirmation - The Sacrament of Confirmation will be administered to the
students of grades 5 and 6 and any other students who need to be Confirmed.
Notification of the date will come from the Bishop's Office.
Parental involvement is extremly important. We request parents to share
in the preparation of sacrament instruction by attending the special meetings
for parents.
SCHOOL HOURS
Pre-K & Kindergarten 8:15am – 2:30pm (except for early dismissal days)
Grades 1 – 8 8:00am – 2:45pm (except for early dismissal days)
Children should NOT report to school earlier than 7:45AM as THEIR IS NO
SUPERVISION UNTIL THEN. THE SCHOOL ASSUMES NO LIABILITY FOR THE CHILD UNTIL
THAT TIME WHEN SUPERVISION BEGINS.
Drop off and pick-up of students is to take place on Edgemont St. at the
large gate. Your child MUST be dropped off on the sidewalk side and NOT in
the middle of the street.
SCHOOL OFFICE
The office is open before, during and after the regular school day. It
is preferred that the principal be seen by appointment. However, in certain
cases, you can stop in the office with your concerns at any time.
SPIRITUAL OBLIGATIONS
Each Catholic student is expected to attend Mass every Sunday or
Saturday evening along with his/her parents. Since this is taught and
stressed in school, failure on the part of the parents to help the child
fulfill this obligation will cause confusion and eventual indifference in the
child's mind. This is a serious obligation, never to be taken lightly.
In school, the Eucharistic Liturgy is usually celebrated on the First
Friday of every month. Aside from this, liturgies or para-liturgies are held
on various occasions to celebrate a particular holyday or special event.
Confessions are made available to the students during the school year.
Students are encouraged to avail themselves of the Sacrament of
Reconciliation on Sundays before Mass.
TESTS
Children are given several days notice of a test. Test papers are
generally sent home over the weekend to be signed and sent in on Monday.
TUITION
Tuition notices are issued by the Rectory. All tuition payments are
taken at the Rectory.
VISITORS
ALL VISITORS to the school are to report to the School Office and sign
in and out. This rule is to be observed as it is a precautionary measure for
the protection of the children.
VOLUNTEERS
St. George School volunteers are dedicated people who have given of
their time and talent for the benefit of all at St. George. Some of the
commitments are: Teacher Aides, Library Aides, Lunch Monitors, and all of
those who have involvement in the extra-curricular programs for our children.
TRANSFERS
Parents must fill out a form which is available in the school office.
Transfers will be issued on the last day of school. All transfers must be
approved by both the Principal and the Pastor.
YEARBOOK
Each year St. George School is proud to have its school yearbook. It is
a pictorial collection of administration, school personnel, students, and the
many events which occurred during the school year. The yearbook is put
together by a Yearbook Committee. It is a book of memories to treasure.
PARENTAL COOPERATION AND SUPPORT
Given the unique, individual status of each parish school and consistent with
the diocesan policy that each child has a right to education but not necessarily
a right to a place in a particular school, parents must realize that
enrollment in our school carries with it a special responsibility for them to
cooperate and fully support our spiritual, academic and disciplinary
formation and policies. When parents give evidence of a blatant refusal to
cooperate and support our policies, which non-cooperation also thereby
negatively affects the entire school program, then the school administration
will issue a written notice for a transfer for that family's
student/students. This notice must be jointly approved by the Principal and
the Parish Pastor.
