Beginning in 1910, Saint George School operated throughout several rooms in the parish rectory. At that time, two teachers taught a full scholastic schedule to 32 students on a daily basis. Included in their curriculum were Lithuanian prayers as well as the Lithuanian language. With the construction of the present church / school structure in 1920, the educational mission of the school was strengthened with the addition of several lay teachers, and the arrival of the religious Sisters in 1923. As the Sisters began their vocation at St. George School, the enrollment began a steady rise and continued to climb until in 1928 it had reached 315 pupils.
After the decline of the 1930’s, a Kindergarten program was added although it functioned and closed many times over the years. However, since 1988 the Kindergarten has been re-established and is currently one of our most successful programs in the school. The highest enrollment of the school dates back to 1955 with a total of 359 pupils. Within the past thirty years, the number of students has generally been between 180 and 200. We currently operate with 215 students for the 2003-2004 school year.
In addition to the presence of the Sisters of St. Francis came the need for lay teachers in the school. The Sisters’ vocations at the school lasted until 1988 when the decision was made to withdraw them from their mission. In September of 1988, the school year began with a completely lay faculty. Ms. Jane Rowles assumed the position of the first lay principal in the school’s history. Over the years, two other lay principals served the St. George community.
Since the late 1990’s the school experienced quite a growth spurt in academics. A professionally run computer program was instituted, a new Pre-K program was established, three brand new classrooms were constructed and laptop computers with internet access were installed in the school.
During these times of development, Saint George never lost sight of their major foundation…small class size, quality academics, faith-filled lives and family atmosphere.
